Today passed off quietly, More Officers drunk than enlisted men.
January 15th
For the last seven (7) days we have been in constant readiness to march with seven days rations. - sometimes even fall in line of march, but again return to quarters. But this morning at 9 AM. our "traps" were all loaded, and troops in line of march. At half past 9 we commenced moving toward Mayfield, Ky. Marched 15 miles then encamped in an open field for the night: the boys making their beds on the snow, which was about 4 inches deep. It has been raining, sleeting and snowing all day, and this evening it is freezing cold. I went to an old straw pile to get some straw, as fast as I pulled out the wet straw it would freeze stiff.
